When I Was Three
by Abraham Gilead Falk-Rood
When I was three
my dad
and I
would go down
to the old poplar tree
and we would throw blue stones
into the golden water
of the beautiful pond
and watch the ripples.
Then we would go
to the blueberry vines
and eat
till our hearts content
and sing
row row row your boat gently down the
stream.
When I was four
my dad and I
would go down
to the silver pond
and catch brown
salamanders
and then
let them go.
When I was five
my dad
and I
would go down
to the silver pond
and get in our little green boat
and row
to the reeds
and catch silver trout
and green frogs
but then
let them go too.
When I was six
my dad and my mom
and I
would walk
through the beautiful silver meadow
to the pond
and then we would
hop straight in
for a nice sunset swim
and watch
the beautiful sun go
behind the mountains.
