Abraham Gilead Falk-Rood (aka Abby) was born August 16, 1989, in Berkeley, California, where he has lived (and made art) for just about his entire life. Although he has never been interested in coloring books, he has experimented with many media of his own invention. For example, he has built creatures and monsters out of scraps of wood, cardboard, packing materials, and remnant pieces from the framer's shop. The toy chest shown below (last row), which Abby made in 1997, is constructed from wood and decorated with paint and ceramics. One of Abby's ongoing passions is clay, a medium he has worked in for three years. Most of his sculpture is abstract, although he has also made some figurative and functional pieces, including teapots in the shapes of dragons and other fantastical creatures. Abby's favorites include several large, pit-fired vessels decorated with engravings and inlays. The pots in the photo to the left are examples, made in 1996. Those below (in the second-to-last row) were made in 1997 and 1998. Abby also enjoys painting landscapes and still lifes and frequently sketches with his mom in her studio or out in nature. Strongly composed and often vividly colored, his paintings have a unique, expressionistic style. The watercolors and drawings made with water-soluble crayon and graphite (first three rows, below) span a four-year period (1994-98), and provide a sampling of the artist's subject matter and techniques. Oh, one more thing: Abby would like you to know that, although he has not disavowed his early work, he is now on to other things. We'll keep you posted as he moves on, and we'll change the exhibit from time to time, so do come visit again. |
